I am guided by emotion, inspired by the beauty, and peacefulness of nature. My goal is to infuse these sources of inspiration into every Print I create.
Meet the Photographer
Hello! I'm Walter Mather and welcome to my website, Mather Fine Art. Thank you for being here! Let me introduce myself to you - first and foremost, I am a husband and father. After that I fall somewhere between explorer and grizzly bear. I love to explore wild lands and see new things and experience new places. That for me is as good as life gets.
But let me start at the beginning. I'm a New Englander and my fondest memories of my childhood are from my families cabin that my father and grandfather built on a lake. Life at the lake filled me with love and appreciation for wildlife – deer, black bears, snapping turtles to name a few. My Aunt Avis had a polaroid camera that she would let me use and I loved taking shots of the wildlife all around me.
I took my first trip to Yellowstone National Park in my early 20’s and after seeing my first grizzly bear, bison, wolf and being immersed in wildlife and nature, I was filled with a sense of purpose. I knew that wildlife photography and sharing the natural world with others was my path.
My wife and I moved to Jackson Hole where I honed my photography skills. We started touring the western US, selling my fine art photography at high end art shows. It was a rewarding experience and we loved meeting so many people and buyers who were interested in the work. After a successful three years and two children later, the travel schedule became challenging and I changed direction and moved into cinematography.
I got a unique opportunity in Colorado to work for a National Geographic television show. To work for National Geographic was a dream come true, and I took that opportunity and ran with it!
I worked really hard and soon thereafter became a Director of Photography in adventure based reality television. I worked on shows such as Ultimate Survival Alaska, Live Free or Die, Killing Fields, Deadliest Catch, Swamp People to name a few.
A couple years back, while in the field, there was an incident where I almost died and it made me reevaluate my life - what I was doing, what I still want to do. The answer was clear, I really wanted to get back in to fine art photography. I started taking photography trips and building up my portfolio again.
In 2019, I decided to combined my two passions - cinematography and nature photography, and that is where my YouTube series “Image Stories” comes from. Image Stories is a YouTube series that I produce that tells the story behind some of the images on my website.
I hope you enjoy Mather Fine Art where you can find my fine art photography and the link to my you tube channel where you can come along with me as I explore our beautiful wild lands in search of my next fine art print.
With gratitude,
Walter
